Replacing Alternator on a 2009-2014 Ford F-150: What You Need

  • 1/2″ Drive extension socket
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • 10mm wrench
  • Fork
  • Ratchet
  • 13mm socket
  • Torque wrench

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Turn off your engine and set the parking brake. Pull on the hood release handle and open the hood. For safety, disconnect the battery.

Step 2: To remove the alternator, start by taking off the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley. Use a breaker bar and a 1/2″ drive extension socket to lift the serpentine belt tensioner and loosen the belt.

Step 3: While holding the tensioner, slide the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley. Release the tensioner.

Step 4: Remove the breather from the air intake hose by pushing the green tab and pulling it off.

Step 5: Unscrew the two clamps on either side of the hose using a flathead screwdriver then remove the hose.

Step 6: Using a 10-mm wrench, unscrew the two screws from the alternator on the driver’s side of the metal bar.

Step 7: Use a fork to disconnect the wiring harness from the metal bar. Unscrew the third mounting screw from the metal bar using the wrench.

Step 8: Disconnect the electrical connector from the metal bar using the fork. Unscrew the fourth screw. Remove the support bar.

Step 9: Use a ratchet and a 13-mm socket to unscrew the two lower mounting nuts from the alternator. Slide the alternator forward to remove it. Press the tab on the electrical connector and disconnect it using a flathead screwdriver.

Step 10: Remove the plastic cover from the negative terminal of the alternator. Unscrew the wire mounting nut from the negative terminal using a ratchet and a 13-mm socket. Remove the wire. Reattach the wire to the negative terminal and screw the nut back on.

Step 11: Replace the plastic cover. Plug in the electrical connector. Slide the alternator back into its housing. Screw the two lower mounting nuts back on. Put the support bar back in place and screw in the first two mounting screws.

Step 12: Reconnect the electrical harness using clips. Attach the electrical connection and screw in the last two mounting screws.

Step 13: Using a torque wrench, fully tighten the two lower mounting nuts.

Step 14: Put the serpentine belt back on the alternator pulley and lower the idler pulley. Replace the air intake hose.

Step 15: Screw the two hose clamps back on. Replace the breather then reconnect the battery.

In order to remove the alternator, you need to remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley.
