Replacing Spark Plugs on a 2009-2014 Ford F-150: What You Need

  • 7mm socket
  • Plastic tube
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Long extender
  • 14mm spark plug socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Torque wrench angle gauge

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Turn off the vehicle’s ignition, engage the parking brake, and open the hood.

Step 2: Locate the spark plugs in the engine compartment.

Step 3: For better access, disconnect the fuel injector by pressing the tab and pulling the connector.

Step 4: Disconnect the power from the ignition coil by pressing the tab and pulling the connector.

Step 5: Use a socket wrench, extender, and 7 mm socket to remove the holding screw from the ignition coil.

Step 6: Carefully remove the coil with small back and forward movements.

Step 7: To prevent debris from falling into the engine, use a thin plastic tube attached to a vacuum to clean around the spark plug.

Step 8: Use a socket wrench, extender, and 14mm spark plug socket to loosen and remove the spark plug. Finish unscrewing by hand and remove the plug.

Step 9: Take the new spark plug and insert it into the spark plug socket. Gently align it with the screwing support.

Step 10: Hand-tighten the new spark plug, then secure it in place with a socket wrench.

Step 11: Choose a technique for tightening the spark plug:

  • Use a torque wrench with the manufacturer’s recommended tightening torque.
  • Use an angular torque gauge to match the recommended angle.

Step 12: Push the ignition coil back in as far as possible and secure the nut using a socket wrench. Finish tightening with a torque wrench.

Step 13: Reconnect the ignition coil by attaching the connector.

Step 14: Reconnect the fuel injector by pressing the connector into place.

Step 15: Repeat the process for the other spark plugs.

Note: Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for tightening torque or angle.

We advise replacing the spark plugs one by one since it is crucial not to get the coils mixed up.
