Replacing Front ABS Sensor on a 2009-2018 Dodge RAM 1500: What You Need

• Ratchet
• 21mm socket
• Flat head screwdriver
• Wire brush
• 5mm Allen socket
• Torque wrench
  • 20 to 250 Ft-lbs
  • 100 to 600 Ft-lbs

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Turn off your engine and engage the parking brake.

Step 2: Loosen the stud bolts on the front wheels.

Step 3: Lift the front of your vehicle.

Step 4: Watch the video on “How to jack your RAM 1500 safely” before proceeding.

Step 5: Place the vehicle on jack stands.

Step 6: To change the front ABS sensor, remove the wheels for full access.

Step 7: Place the removed wheels under the vehicle.

Step 8: Remove the caliper assembly.

Step 9: Secure the assembly to the upper control arm using a wire.

Step 10: Unscrew the two screws from the caliper mount using a ratchet and a 21mm socket.

Step 12: Attach the assembly to the iron wire previously installed.

Step 13: Use a flat head screwdriver to pull the retainer away from the disc and remove the disc.

Step 14: Locate and inspect the ABS sensor.

Step 15: Use a ratchet and a 5mm Allen socket to unscrew the ABS sensor retaining screw.

Step 16: Remove the sensor by jiggling it back and forth.

Step 17: Unclip all retaining clips for the ABS sensor cable starting from the wheel knuckle.

Step 18: Unclip the ABS sensor cable retaining clip behind the mudguard.

Step 19: Disconnect the connector by pushing on the red plastic tab, prying the tab, and pulling it.

Step 20: Remove the cable from the last clip and move it aside.

Step 21: Spray contact cleaner on the connectors.

Step 22: Take the new cable and place it back in its upper slot, then reconnect it.

Step 23: Clip the ABS sensor connector back inside the mudguard.

Step 24: Clip the sensor into its various slots.

Step 25: Thread the sensor through the opening in the brake backing plate and insert it into its slot.

Step 26: Retighten the retaining screw and finish tightening using a torque wrench.

Step 27: Reinstall the brake disc and put the retainer back in place.

Step 28: Reinstall the caliper assembly and screw it back on.

Step 29: Finish tightening using a torque wrench.

Step 30: Remove the wire used to hold the caliper assembly together.

Step 31: Put the wheels back on your vehicle.

Step 32: Lower the car and block the wheels properly.

Step 33: Operation complete.
