The new GMC Hummer EV set to arrive at dealerships in the United States for the 2022 model year is undoubtedly one of the most awaited vehicles today. The nameplate’s flagship model, Edition 1, is expected to butt heads with Tesla’s Cybertruck in the market.

However, with key features such as a removable roof and four detachable individual panels, the upcoming Hummer is also pegged as a potential rival to the likes of the Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler, whose panels are also demountable.

According to GMC, giving the Hummer EV a removable roof was possible because of the vehicle’s structural rigidity brought by its large battery pack.

Based on what was announced during the launch, the removable panels will be transparent and will come as a standard feature on the Edition 1. It remains to be seen, however, if it’s the same case for the Hummer’s upcoming variants.

The electric truck will come with a fixed bar running between the B-pillars parallel to the windshield. A removable bar will also run perpendicular to the windshield between the A- and B-pillars. This second bar will be placed right between the front roof panels, while there will be another fixed bar running perpendicular to the windshield and between the B- and C-pillars.

When removed, all four panels can be stored in the trunk. Customers will get a vinyl storage bag as a standard-issue, but they also have an option to get foam storage boxes at dealerships.

It’s unclear whether removing the panels will be easy or difficult. But based on previous reports, the ones on the Gladiator and Wrangler are relatively effortless to detach even one person can do it.
