Who would’ve thought that a typical smartphone technology would find its way into vehicles like trucks?

This idea is now made a reality as it was recently announced that a Gorilla Glass windshield will be available for the Ford F-150.

Owners of the well-loved Ford truck now have the option to replace their factory windshield with Corning’s Gorilla Glass, which is best known as the technology used for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Instead of the conventional windshields that use heat-tempered glass, America’s highest-selling vehicle can now be equipped with a sturdier Gorilla Glass.

But how much does it cost to make an F-150 windshield practically chip- and crack-free? The Gorilla Glass windshield is sold for $900 and could go higher depending on the customer’s preferred options.

The introduction of the technology means drivers no longer have to worry about rock chips or cracks, which could cause a huge dent not only in their trucks, but also their pockets. It also strengthens Ford’s campaign for the F-150 Raptor as an off-road-ready vehicle.

A replacement stock windshield from Ford typically retails for about $400 to more than $500, depending on the features. For a windshield equipped with automatic rain-sensing wipers, the price goes higher than $400. Aftermarket options, meanwhile, normally cost around $300 to $400, still depending on which company supplies the product. The Gorilla Glass windshield is sold for $900 and could go higher depending on the customer’s preferred options.

It surely doesn’t come cheap, but for F-150 owners who want to make the most of their truck’s full capability, having a Gorilla Glass windshield doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Aside from the Ford F-150 trucks, Ford’s GT supercar and the Jeep JK Wrangler are also offered with a Gorilla Glass option.
