General Motors is coming up with new generations of its full-size SUVs–the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Suburban–for the 2021 model year, the company’s CEO Mary Barra confirmed.
Barra, however, refused to give details on the exact timing or whether the six-week UAW strike that recently ended will affect production.
The full-size SUVs mentioned are among the most sought-after models from the brand, consistently being named GM’s top sellers. But eyes are particularly peeled on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, whose fifth generation was promised by company executives to be “worth the wait” since Lincoln released its new Navigator.
The Escalade was once the automaker’s flagship vehicle when other companies were releasing large sedans left and right. It also gave the Cadillac nameplate a cooler vibe at a time when General Motors was rebuilding its portfolio and reputation.
For the 2021 model year, the Escalade will carry a giant grille and show a closer resemblance to the new CT4 and CT5 sedans. Its exterior is also planned to be more dramatic than the XT6’s, while the interior design and materials will also be improved.
With regard to the powertrain, the upcoming Escalade will be offered with more than one, including an updated version of the 6.2-liter V-8 that’s already being used on the flagship Cadillac. Initial plans to give the Escalade a 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged Blackwing V-8 were shelved for now, but the Performance or V variants are still expected to have a the 6.2-liter supercharged small block V-8.
Also arriving for the Escalade, Yukon, and Suburban are regular and stretched versions, although production is likely not going to begin until the first quarter of 2020.
