General Motors recently announced it will be strengthening the infotainment system setup of vehicles across its brands for the 2021 model year. This includes models from the Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick lineups.
Based on a research conducted by GM, more and more customers “prefer an embedded technology experience” in their vehicles, and “increasingly expect seamless integration between the tech in their hands and the tech.” As such, among the first upgrades to be introduced is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
The brand also shared it is currently working with Google on new options for a voice assistant feature, embedded navigation, and in-vehicle applications designed for compatibility with Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick models globally. These features are expected to be available beginning 2021 and will then be rolled out across all brands under the General Motors umbrella.
“We are re-envisioning the future in-vehicle customer experience, and this is just the first step. The integration of select Google technology and services into our vehicle infotainment systems will foster a more connected and efficient driving system,” Santiago Chamorro, vice president for GM’s Global Connected Customer Experience, said. Chamorro also added that more Google applications and services will complement the infotainment features currently in GM’s vehicles such as recommendations, vehicle health status, and in-vehicle commerce.
Other Google services that will also be included in GM’s updated infotainment system is the Google Assistant, which allows drivers to make calls, send a text, play podcasts, or change the cabin temperature using voice-activated technology. This feature also helps in home navigation, sharing ETA, and finding the nearest gas or EV charging stations. Google Maps will also be embedded for real-time information on automatic re-routing, traffic, and lane guidance.
