The Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade are getting an important infotainment feature for the 2021 model year.
The full-size SUVs from General Motors will all be joining the new TrailBlazer in sporting wireless AppleCarPlay and Android Auto capability starting next year, allowing customers to control their smartphone apps through the big central touchscreen without having to plug a USB cable into the console.
This may seem like a minor change for some, but anyone who has lost plenty of USB cables would surely appreciate the upgrade.
While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility have been around in the automotive industry for quite some time, a wireless version of the technology is relatively new. Also, there are still a lot of manufacturers who haven’t introduced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in their systems, much less a wireless integration.
Prior to the full-size SUVs getting the upgrade, the subcompact Chevrolet TrailBlazer was the first GM product confirmed to get the wireless smartphone tech as part of its optional Technology Package. It’s still unclear if the same feature will be optional for the full-size SUVs or whether it will be included as standard equipment.
The wireless smartphone integration is expected to complement GM’s wireless phone charging feature, which means owners of the 2021 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, or Escalade may never need a USB cable in their cars.
The full-size SUVs are getting a complete redesign for the 2021 model year and will be riding on the same platform as the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, except that they are getting an independent multilink rear suspension setup.
This new setup allowed GM to lower the load floor of the vehicles and add more cargo space and passenger areas.
The new models are set to go on sale later this year.
