Ford has been meaning to bring back the Maverick to its lineup. Originally built between 1966 and 1977, the model was sold as a coupe or sedan. But for its reborn version, the automaker is reportedly looking at producing a compact pickup that will slot right below the Ford Ranger.
While the Blue Oval has not released the final details, certain information has leaked every now and then, which was helpful for interested buyers in piecing together what to expect from the upcoming model.
In terms of size, the returning Maverick is said to be smaller than the Ranger. This led to rumors claiming the model will be offered with two doors and a regular cab. However, according to reports shared by Ford Authority’s inside sources, the upcoming Maverick will only be available with a four-door configuration and a SuperCrew cab version.
As the Maverick is expected to be around two feet shorter than the Ranger, its bed cannot accommodate large loads and there might not be as much legroom for rear passengers. Moreover, it will likely have a lower height, which doesn’t make it ideal for off-roading.
Ford has yet to confirm the underpinnings for the small pickup, but there have been conflicting reports of it sharing a platform with the Bronco Sport and Escape or the Transit Connect. If it ends up sharing the architecture of the former, a 1.5-liter three-cylinder or a 2.0-liter turbo-four could be the frontrunners for engine options.
However, if it turns out to be a close cousin of the Transit Connect, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder might find its way to the all-new Maverick.
While the upcoming model will have fewer options available for customers, it is still an affordable alternative to the Ranger. Based on the latest estimates, the compact truck will have a starting price of around $19,000 to $20,000.
