Ford’s upcoming Fusion Active wagon due for release next year may be the automaker’s last remaining wagon in the Fusion lineup after it decided to drop the ax on the Fusion sedan either later this year or early next year.

Station wagons may be practical to have, but they are not something American consumers are very much interested in, as evidenced by the steadily growing demand for SUVs and pickup trucks while wagon sales continue to decline.

But for the 2022 model year, the company is streamlining its efforts in the development of the Fusion Active, a lifted all-wheel-drive based on the European Mondeo wagon.

It’s likely going to be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. As for other features, nothing else is known about the new Ford model.

Whether it will find success in the segment, however, remains to be seen. But if the Subaru Outback managed to develop a cult following in the American market, it’s possible the Fusion Active could replicate the feat.

Considering the latest developments in the U.S. automotive industry amid the coronavirus pandemic, however, it’s unclear if Ford’s timetable will be followed.
