It’s no secret that Ford is bringing back a plug-in hybrid version to one of its SUVs for the first time since 2012. It’s coming in the form of the Escape plug-in hybrid for the 2020 model year.

As the model nears its arrival, more details about the model are released to the public. The latest of which is EPA’s mileage estimates.

“The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV, and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product development and purchasing officer, in a statement.

Powered by a 2.5-liter inline-four engine and a 14.4-kWh battery delivering a combined output of 221 horsepower, the model is also estimated to reach 37 miles of electric-only range, as well as 100 MPGe. Its drivetrain can be fully charged in 3.5 hours using a 204-volt Level 2 charger.

These numbers are expected to boost the Escape plug-in hybrid’s standing in the saturated segment where it will go head to head with the Toyota RAV4 Prime. Just recently, Toyota announced that the Prime has an estimated 42-mile battery-only range and 94 MPGe.

It’s a bit more expensive at $39,220 compared to the Escape’s $34,285, but the Toyota model delivers a total of 302 horsepower.

Aside from details on the range and powertrain, Ford also shared that the upcoming Escape features more passenger space than its Fusion Energi plug-in sibling. It also has up to four times more cargo volume behind the second-row seats.
