BMW is halting sales of select M models due to a transmission issue.

The stop-sale and recall cover the M5, all variants of the M8, X5 M, and X6 M.

According to reports, the automaker has already notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agency that oversees recalls in the United States, ahead of the announcement’s publication.

BMW is in the process of ensuring that the necessary tools, parts, and procedures are available prior to contacting owners affected by the recall.

Vehicles affected by the stop-sale and recall include the F90 Series M5 sedan from January 30, 2019 – October 30, 2019; F91 Series M8 convertible from February 20, 2019 – October 30, 2019; F92 Series M8 coupe from July 3, 2019 – October 20, 2019; F93 Series M8 Gran Coupe from June 19, 2019 – October 29, 2019; F95 Series X5 M Sports Activity Vehicles from June 6 – November 27, 2019; and F96 Series X6 M Sports Activity Coupe from May 30, 2019 – November 26, 2019.

The problem is caused by a glitch on the location and routing of the transmission wiring harness, which can cause damage to the components and eventually lead to a short circuit. The problem can also cause the gearbox to shift into neutral while driving, increasing risks of accident and injury.

Owners of the affected models are advised to bring their cars to a dealership where technicians will replace the transmission wiring harness and reroute it to a safer position.

BMW won’t be selling the affected vehicles until all repairs are complete. The company is also scheduled to mail recall notifications to customers in February.

“BMW is in the process of ensuring that the necessary tools, parts, and procedures are available prior to contacting owners to schedule an appointment with their authorized BMW center to have this important Safety Recall performed,” the company’s statement said.
