America’s Best-Selling Ford F-150 Is Not a Favorite in Some States

The Ford F-150 truck may be the best-selling truck in America for several decades now, but there are still states where the truck is not the favorite–19 to be exact.

According to a report published by car-research site Edmunds.com, there were several other models that bested the F-series truck in 19 states in America, including Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Additionally, with the exception of the states of California and Florida, the most popular vehicle in these states was either a pickup or an SUV.

“It just shows as a nation how truck dependent we really are,” Edmunds analyst Jessica Caldwell said.

But it also shows how willing customers are to spend on vehicles because, according to vehicle price tracker Kelley Blue Book, midsize pickups cost an average of $35,407 in December, while midsize SUVs are at $39,878. These numbers are significantly higher than the average price of a non-luxury midsize car at $26,104.

Edmunds.com further shared that the F-series was hailed number one in most of the Midwest, including Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin, as well as most of the South, including Georgia, South Carlina, and Tennessee.

But there are at least five states that ranked Fiat Chrysler’s Ram pickup at first place, particularly states located west of the Mississippi River. These include Arkansas, Arizona, and Nevada. The model claimed the recognition as America’s second best-selling vehicle for the first time in 2019, overtaking the Chevrolet Silverado in the process.

The Silverado, which is currently in third place in terms of sales, was the first pick in Iowa and Minnesota, while the Toyota Tacoma mid-size pickup was the favorite in Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Edmunds.com’s analysis was based on retail vehicle registration data, meaning sales to commercial customers or governments were not included in the demographics.

In the states of Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington state, and Washington, D.C., the Toyota RAV4 SUV is number one. The Honda CR-V, meanwhile, won the favor of consumers in Virginia, New Jersey, and Connecticut, while California preferred passenger cars, with the Honda Civic topping the list.
