Not even a pandemic can stop the Ford Ranger from racking up sales in the United States.

The latest set of data revealed that the model raked in an increase of 123% in sales in the first quarter of 2020 alone.

When it was reintroduced to the United States market, the Ford Ranger rode a wave of extreme hype that saw it recording decent sales numbers. But, as the excitement over the model waned, it started to struggle in the market.

This was evidenced by the disappointing sales of only 9,241 units in the first quarter of 2019. This number is significantly low compared to the Ranger’s rival Chevrolet Colorado, which has sold 33,494 units as well as segment leader Toyota Tacoma with 58,183 units in the same period.

Ford Ranger on red carpet
The recent increase in sales puts comfortably puts the Ford Ranger in third place behind league leaders Tacoma and Colorado.

Come 2020, though, the Ford Ranger is enjoying a complete turnaround. It is also the only model other than the Jeep Gladiator whose sales increased, while other midsize pickup trucks recorded plummeting sales figures.

Toyota Tacoma’s sales, for one, fell by as much as 7.81%, while the Chevrolet Colorado was hit the hardest in the segment with a 36.02%. This comfortably puts the Ranger in third place behind league leaders Tacoma and Colorado.

As for the Gladiator, it is worth noting that the model’s current generation was only released to the public a year ago. This means that the 15,259 units sold this year are expected to project enormous growth for the 123 units sold last year.

Come second quarter, it still remains to be seen how the entire automotive industry will fare amid an economic crisis and the coronavirus outbreak that’s not showing signs of eradication.
