Mazda is known as one of the safest cars on the road but it still continues to impress experts by its performance and safety record.

In a list of the safest 2020 model-year cars compiled and released by the Institute for Highway Safety, five models are from Mazda and all are given the highest Top Safety Pick+ award by the institution.

One of the models is the 2020 Mazda 3, which also received five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in a frontal crash, side crash, and rollover tests, making the car eligible for the highest government safety ratings possible.

“We are proud that the 2020 Mazda3 has earned NHTSA’s top rating for crashworthiness,” Mazda North American President Jeff Guyton said. “Mazda’s i-Activsense advanced safety features on the Mazda3 help provide even more peace of mind for the driver, helping enhance our customer’s driving experience.”

The NHTSA recognition bolsters Mazda3’s credentials, following the Top Safety Pick+ award it earned from the IIHS.

The crash avoidance systems recommended by the NHTSA are among the features that earned the car the recognition. These include forward-collision warning, lane departure warning, crash imminent braking, and dynamic brake support.

Also included are the standard tech from the brand’s i-Activsense safety systems such as smart brake support, radar cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, driver attention alert, as well as automatic on/off LED headlights, high beam control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Both the sedan and hatchback models of the Mazda3 were redesigned for the 2019 model year. Unfortunately, the current generation of the vehicle is experiencing below-average sales performance with 2019 sales down by 21.5%.

These safety awards could be the publicity the model needs to attract customers who are all for championing safety.
