A union document between Ford and the United Automobile Workers is making its rounds online, suggesting the 2020 Ford Bronco is getting an aluminum body.
In a Bronco forum called Bronco 6G, a post reveals Dearborn Stamping/Dearborn Diversified Manufacturing Plant could be handling the panels for the SUV. Dearborn is the same plant producing the aluminum body for the F-150, which may be indicative the upcoming Bronco could be following suit.
If this proves true, having an aluminum body would keep the Bronco’s weight down, thus making its removable doors easier to lift—that is, if the new Bronco ends up with the specialized doors as speculated.
However, the use of aluminum for the body may not be the best option for owners looking to take the Bronco off-roading. It can be more difficult to repair compared to steel panels and may not be as sturdy on the trail or the dunes.
Ford has not released a statement confirming the union document and has remained silent on other details about the new Bronco. So far, what’s known is that the SUV will ride on a body-on-frame chassis and is expected to have solid front and rear axles. It will also be offered with two- and four-door variants and, according to reports, will be powered by a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the same unit in the Ford Ranger that makes 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
The 2020 Ford Bronco is set to arrive next spring and the automaker is expected to release more details about the SUV in the coming months.
