Following previous reports that Dodge is working on a new flagship version of the Dodge Challenger in time for a 2021 release, more recent claims are suggesting the model will not debut until 2023 after the automaker announced a delay in the production. The same goes for the rumored successor of the also-aging Dodge Charger.

Some photos of the 2020 Challenger released by Dodge earlier this year seem to hint at the release date being 2023 because it is the same number displayed on the odometer.

Although it could very well be just purely coincidental, there is reason to believe the rumors are true.

, Will Dodge Be Replacing the Challenger, Charger in 2023?
Whether the automaker will launch the new Challenger in 2021 or 2023, people can expect the model’s next generation to keep the retro design, as hinted by Mark Trostle, Dodge’s head of design. | Source: Dodge

Despite its age, the Challenger still manages to maintain its position as the segment leader in the third quarter of 2019. Eleven years after it was released, the model is also still outselling its biggest competitors, the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang, both of which have released newer and more updated models with better technology in the last few years. This shows that a 2021 release for the new Challenger coupe does not make much sense for Dodge.

But whether the automaker will launch the new Challenger in 2021 or 2023, people be expect the model’s next generation to keep the retro design, consistent to what Mark Trostle, head of design for Dodge, Chrysler, and SRT, recently shared: that he is “committed to keeping the retro vibe alive.”
