Eighteen months after the model was officially launched, Chevrolet has finally shared the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) fuel economy ratings for the 2020 Silverado 1500 Duramax.

The vehicle, which has an all-new turbodiesel 3.0-liter I-6 engine, was revealed to have an impressive 23 city and 33 highway mpg in two-wheel-drive configurations, as well as 23 city mpg and 29 highway mpg for four-wheel-drive trucks, according to EPA’s recent testing.

General Motor’s executive chief engineer of Full-Size Trucks, Tim Herrick, couldn’t be prouder of the Silverado 1500 Duramax and pointed out that the ratings are the best among all pickup trucks available in the market today. It’s even better than fuel efficiency ratings of midsize sedans such as the Toyota Camry V-6, Honda Accord 2.0T, and its sibling, Malibu 2.0T.

“This is the day that Chevrolet went out and showed everyone exactly what we could do,” Herrick said.

In comparison to other diesel-powered light-duty trucks, the Silverado 1500 does make its competitors eat dust. The Power Stroke version of the bestselling Ford F-150 truck with two-wheel drive only registers 22 city and 30 highway mpg. The numbers also significantly drop for four-wheel drive configurations with just 20 city and 25 highway mpg. And while the upcoming diesel Ram 1500’s economy ratings has yet to be tested, its predecessor 1500 Classic only has 20 city and 27 highway mpg ratings for two-wheel drive, and 19 city and 27 highway mpg for the four-wheel drive.

On top of better fuel economy ratings, the Siverado 1500 also registers an impressive 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, thanks to its turbodiesel I-6, which is the first for any light-duty truck from GM. These numbers are obviously way more than the F-150 Power Stroke’s 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, as well as the Ram 1500 Classic EcoDiesel’s 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft torque.

With these numbers, it shouldn’t be a surprise if the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 also performs better in sales than its competitors.
