The all-new Mitsubishi Outlander just arrived for the 2022 model year and it’s looking aggressively better and more premium than its predecessor both inside and out. It’s also the first model to come out of the highly publicized Mitsubishi-Nissan alliance.
The revamped Outlander shares the same platform and engine as the Nissan Rogue. But that’s where the similarities end: Mitsubishi’s compact SUV features a unique exterior accentuated by a domineering front end, a prominent grille, an overload of chrome trimmings, and an unique lighting arrangement that comes with daytime running lights, headlights, and fog lights.
Its also larger than its predecessor and features a third row of seats, allowing more space for as many as seven passengers. It directly competes with the Volkswagen Tiguan, which is the only other model in the segment that offers the same amount of space.
Moreover, the 2022 Outlander comes standard with a 2.5-liter inline-four engine that delivers up to 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque and pairs with a continuously variable transmission. It’s pretty much the same as the Rogue’s, except that the Outlander may be a bit on the heavier side owing to its third row of seats.
Also available as standard equipment is a front-wheel-drive, while an all-wheel-drive capability is offered as an option. A plug-in-hybrid version is set to arrive much later, although Mitsubishi has not released any information about it yet.
Other features included in the new Outlander are a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system as well as the optional 9.0-inch screen and digital gauge cluster display. For the higher trim levels, customers can expect a head-up display, a power liftgate, a set of 20-inch wheels, leather seats, and a suite of driver-assistance features.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is scheduled to go on sale this April with a starting price of $26,990. It’s around $900 more than the outgoing model and a bit more expensive than the Nissan Rogue. The final pricing details for the entire range are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
