In December last year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced a tougher set of requirements for its coveted Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick Plus awards. This made it harder for most automakers to achieve the much coveted plum.
But this doesn’t seem to be the case for the 2021 Ram 1500 as it recently bagged the Top Safety Pick recognition from the agency—the only pickup to do so in 2020.
The accolade comes with a few considerations. For one, the truck has to be set up with a front-crash prevention system that can detect pedestrians. It also needs to have a set of headlights that has the same spec as the IIHS Top Safety Pick. For the Ram 1500, this amounts to an additional $10,000 on the retail price.
Without the technology and the headlights, however, the 2021 Ram 1500 still managed to score high marks on six crashworthiness tests IIHS conducted. It just fell short of the Top Safety Pick Plus recognition because the headlights that earned top marks are not standard equipment on the truck.
Still, the Top Safety Pick recognition is something worth bragging about for Ram.
