Nissan is hard at work at making its vehicles a lot safer in the coming model year, with plenty of models getting driver assistance tech.

The automaker is joining the observance of National Teen Driver Safety Week with an announcement that the brand’s Safety Shield 360 package will be offered as standard equipment on no less than ten models beginning 2021. The package comes with a pack of six active safety technologies.

“Offering these safety technologies as standard equipment on 10 of our most popular models is an important step forward,” said Andy Christensen, senior manager and lead technology expert of Intelligent Transportation System Research at the Nissan Technical Center in North America. “This added layer of protection can keep young drivers safe especially as they are getting used to being on busy roads.”

The Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, high beam assist, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking.

Prior to the announcement, the safety package is available on models such as the Nissan Leaf, Kicks, Sentra, Rogue Sport, and Titan. The all-new 2020 Sentra and 2021 Rogue are also set to be equipped with the technologies once they arrive at dealerships.

According to data published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, cars equipped with advanced driver safety systems have a lower number of accidents and injuries by as much as 56%. Moreover, accidents involving vehicles with a rear automatic braking feature are reduced by 78%, while those with rear cross-traffic alert see a reduction by 22%.
