The Subaru Forester has a lot of features customers would love, which explains why it has remained a consistent best-seller for the brand. But if there is one thing the model could improve on, it’s in the performance department.

This appears to be something Subaru is working on, as a recent report claimed that the automaker is looking to give the Forester a turbocharged engine, at least in Japan for now. The turbo engine, which also powers the Subaru Levorg wagon,  will replace the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-four engine.

According to reports, the turbo motor delivers up to 174 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It’s not as powerful as the current engine, but it has significantly more torque than the 2.5-liter Boxer that can only generate 176 lb-ft despite the 182 hp output.

Taking into account Subaru of America’s recent pricing announcement for the 2021 Forester, though, it remains to be seen if the new turbocharged engine will join the U.S. lineup or whether it will replace the 2.5-liter powertrain. But if it does, this could spell a lot of trouble for the Forester’s market rivals.

Despite the addition of a new engine to the Forester in Japan, customers can expect the continuously variable transmission to remain unchanged. There are also no reports of changes in the trim levels so far.

The turbocharged Forester is scheduled for release in Japan this October. It will go head-to-head with other turbocharged models such as the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5.
