A more powerful engine is always welcome news for customers, especially if it’s turbocharged.

But then again, it doesn’t come cheap.

Such is the case for the new Mazda CX-30, following reports that the Japanese automaker is giving it the same 2.5-liter I4 engine that powers the Mazda3. The two models share the same underpinnings, with the CX-30 being hailed as the SUV version of the popular sedan.

In the CX-30, the engine will be mated to an all-wheel-drive, delivering up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

The new powertrain, however, ushers a significant price increase for the model. Based on recent reports, an entry-level CX-30 could cost $31,000, inclusive of the destination charge. It’s an increase of about $8,000 compared to the current model that has a $23,000 MSRP.

The CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus, meanwhile, could go as high as $35,000 when furnished with a complete set of accessories.
