Toyota is trying to prove the Corolla can be as fun as other flashy sedans on the market with the announcement of a special edition hatchback for the model.
Ahead of the release of the 257-horsepower turbocharged GR Corolla, the Japanese automaker shared it will launch a Limited Supersonic Red Edition of the Corolla Hatchback for the coming model year.
Only a total of 1,500 units will be available for the special variant, which will come with a factory-installed black-accented body kit that includes a front splitter, rear roof, side skirts, spoiler, and a “Special Edition” badge on the back. It also gets black 18-inch wheels that give the model the ultimate sporty look.
In terms of powertrain, however, the Special Ed will only be offered with the continuously variable transmission. The model will be equipped by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 169 horsepower, which is a far cry from the 257-horsepower 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine that powers the GR Yaris.
Like the Corolla Hatchback’s SE variant, the Special Edition will be equipped with a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi connectivity, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth hands-free, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa capability, as well as six speakers. It will also have other advanced techs such as single-zone climate control and paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel. Too, the car will be fitted with a leather-wrapped shift knob for a stylish touch.
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback Special Red Edition is expected to arrive in late summer with a starting price of not more than $25,000. It will be offered, alongside the Nightshade Edition, as a 2021 model.
