The upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee for the 2021 model year will adopt a bigger size compared with its outgoing model. It will be riding the Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio platform and may potentially be offered with a hybrid version when it gets released in the market.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee was recently spotted while undergoing tests. This is the first time that the SUV will have a full redesign since 2010.
Based on photos of the heavily camouflaged Grand Cherokee, it will have a longer wheelbase and rear overhang that should allow more interior space and cargo room. Slim taillights are also included as well as the brand’s iconic seven-slot grille.
Aside from the few changes seen on the exterior of the SUV, it is expected that the interior will receive other upgrades such as a 12-inch touchscreen like that of the Ram 1500 plus more driver-assist features.
As part of the Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio platform, the upcoming Grand Cherokee will keep its independent rear suspension. It will also have two rows of seats similar to a yet to be identified crossover on the same platform which will be placed next to the Grand Cherokee on Jeep’s assembly line.
Although nothing is confirmed, the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four hybrid is expected to be the Grand Cherokee’s base engine, while the new Pentastar V-6 with the eTorque hybrid-assist system will be offered as the mid-range choice.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee could be revealed during the first half of 2020 at the latest and will go on sale by the end of 2020 as part of the brand’s 2021 lineup. A plug-in hybrid version, however, might not debut until a few years later once confirmed. Interested buyers shouldn’t be surprised if the price of the upcoming model increases from the current generation’s $33,440 base price.
