Honda Accord buyers are in for a surprise as the sedan is getting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on top of a new engine management software.

The wireless feature will be offered on the model’s EX-L and Touring variants and will be compatible with the 8-inch touchscreen exclusive to the trims. Other Accord models in the lineup are also getting Apple and Android connectivity, but they will require owners to physically plug in their devices into the instrument cluster.

This update is great news for people considering getting the new Accord. But how about those who already pulled the trigger on getting the vehicle prior to the update?

Honda said it is working to retrofit older Accord models with the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through a software update.

According to a post made by an Accord owner on Reddit, Honda conducted a survey among its customers checking their interest in potential wireless smartphone integration.

The survey read: “Honda has added wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to some trim levels for the 2021 Accord. This feature could be made available to 2018 Accord owners, like yourself, through a software upgrade to the vehicle’s infotainment system. This upgrade would let you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto without plugging in your phone.”

This was followed by a question asking car owners to rate the level of their interest in the upgrade. According to Honda, those who are getting the upgrade would either be sent a USB stick to plug into their vehicle or be referred to a download page on the automaker’s website. Having the software upgrade done at the dealership is also an option, but it will come with a fee.

Moreover, Honda is looking at whether customers are willing to shell out money for the extra feature before officially releasing it. The wireless upgrade could cost $50, while a package including the wireless smartphone connectivity and a Qi wireless charger could set a customer back by $150 to $200.

Honda has yet to make the final announcement regarding the rollout of the wireless connectivity in older Accord models. For now, owners of the 2021 version can enjoy the upgrade.
