Hi there,
Those symptoms with your 2005 Jeep Liberty sounds concerning. Here are some possible causes of the problem you had encountered:
Engine light flashing and stalling:
1. A possible misfire which means one or more cylinders aren't burning fuel properly. It could be due to bad spark plugs, ignition coils, or a clogged fuel injector.
2. Fuel system issues. A clogged/bad fuel filter or failing fuel pump would prevent the engine from running normally after starting.
Pinging noise near the gas tank:
3. The noise you were hearing could be related to the EVAP system. The EVAP system captures and stores gasoline vapors to prevent them from being released into the atmosphere. The leak could be the cause of a bad purge valve which results in the pinging sound.
4. Loose heat shield. A less likely cause of the problem but a possibility. If not bolted or attached properly, it can cause vibrations and create a pinging noise when the car is hot.
Lastly, it is best to have a certified mechanic run a diagnostic to properly address the issue. There could be two or more problems causing those things you were experiencing. I hope this helps!
