The P1778 code points to a problem with the CVT's step motor, affecting gear engagement. To address this, check the transmission fluid level and condition, ensuring it is clean and at the correct level. Inspect the transmission fluid pressure and consider replacing the step motor if found faulty. Additionally, examine the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for damage and inspect wiring and connectors for any issues. Given the complexity though, I would recommend you take it in if you arent confident on your abilities to do this.

Hi there,
Issues with the step motor function or its circuit will alert the powertrain control module to register a P1778 code. This code usually applies to vehicles with an OBD-II system and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The step motor changes the step by turning four coils ON/OFF according to the signal from Transmission Control Module (TCM). As a result, the flow of line pressure to the primary pulley is changed and the pulley ratio is controlled. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set when the step motor does not respond to the TCM command.
