There are several potential causes for this problem. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and address the issue: Check transmission fluid level and condition, check the transmission fluid pressure, check for transmission fluid leaks, inspect the shift linkage, it could be governor issues, valve body problems, check wiring and connectors, ensure that the TCM is properly connected and functioning, check the throttle position sensor (TPS) adjustment, and check the torque converter.
With all of these as potential sources of the issue, personally I would take it to the mechanic, but if you feel inclined to do so these are the things you'll need to check.

Hi there,
If the transmission is not shifting and only operates in first and reverse, there are several potential causes for the issue. Here are the most common reasons why the transmission is not working properly:
1. Check the transmission fluid if it is at the correct level and in good condition.
2. Check and perform a transmission fluid pressure test to confirm adequate fluid pressure.
3. Scan for diagnostic trouble codes, which could provide clues as to what part is defective or needs replacement.
4. Check and look for any wiring issues on the transmission that could affect its normal operation, such as loose connectors due to rusty terminals or pushed-out prong terminals.
A professional mechanic is still the best to troubleshoot and diagnose your vehicle. I hope this helps!
