It sounds like you have a shift servo going out or a vacuum issue.

It's something inside the transmission.

luHas it always been this way? Or is this a recent change? Sorry, but I have to ask, is this your first car? That almost sounds normal. They are made to "kick down" into a lower gear when you are stepping on the gas with a little pressure. That's so that you don't Lug the engine. Meaning, trying to accelerate with the RPMs (engine speed) too low. Kind of basic but I had to start there. Not sure today but in the old days there used to be a simple adjustment for the kick down sensitivity. Good luck finding an honest transmission shop. Hi there,
If your car only shifts gears when you let off the gas pedal suggests potential issues with the transmission and its related components. Here are the possible problems:
1. Transmission solenoid issues. A defective solenoid, which controls the flow of fluid, can cause shifting problems.
2. Low transmission fluid. Low transmission fluid causes shifting problems.
3. Transmission valve body issues. If valve body is dirty, clogged, or damaged, it will cause erratic or delayed shifting.
4. Faulty speed sensors. The sensors provide crucial input about vehicle speed, which is necessary for proper shifting.
5. Internal transmission mechanical issues. Bad or worn out clutch plates or bands, damaged gears, or defective torque converter can result to shifting issues.
I hope this helps!
