hit a puddle and car cut off 2018 hyundai elantra, why did this happen?

I hit a few puddles during a storm and my car cut off, and I barely made it home, then the car wouldn't start. Do you know why this happened?

You likely have water in your fresh air intake manifold. It's difficult to get water up there through the air filter but it's possible.

change your air filter. Let your vehicle dry out for a while (24hours) and try starting again. Either your MAF sensor sensed water or your fresh air is completely stopping fresh air from entering your intake manifold.

should start after changing your air filter and allowing it to dry out.

thank you so much. I just had 2 oxygen sensors put in a few days ago, it was working fine. now this storm comes and floods out the car. thanks again.

Hi there,

It is possible that water entered the engine or some electrical components, which caused the loss of power. See the following reasons why: 1. Water may have contaminated the ignition system of your car causing it to stall. 2. Water might have reached the fuse box and other sensors, which could short circuit the electrical system causing the engine loss of power. 3. The intake is contaminated with water (if engine shuts off abruptly). It can result to hydrolock which water fills the combustion chamber instead of air, preventing the engine from rotating. Wait for it to dry out or use a strong compressed air to air blow the affected areas of the engine. I hope the details help.
