I would personally keep running a sea foam or Lucas fuel injector cleaner through it for two gas tank cycles worth if that makes sense. If that doesn't clear anything up I'd suggest a tune up and change spark plugs and spark plug wires and see what that does.

Hi there,
If your 2004 Jeep Cherokee continuously has black carbon exhaust, it could indicate a problem with the fuel or air mixture in the engine. The possible causes are as follows: 1. Rich fuel mixture, which means there is much amount of fuel in proportion to the amount of air being supplied to the engine. It happens if there is a defective fuel injector, oxygen sensor, or a badly clogged air filter in your car's engine, resulting in incomplete combustion and a black carbon exhaust output. 2. A defective EGR valve. It may not close properly causing an excessive amount of exhaust gas to enter the engine, which results in a rich fuel mixture and black carbon exhaust. 3. A clogged or bad catalytic converter. A restricted exhaust flow will cause black carbon exhaust. 4. Defective Mass airflow sensor, which provides inaccurate readings, causing the ECU to deliver incorrect fuel-air mixture and rich fuel mixture which results in a black carbon exhaust. I hope this helps!
