Hello there.
If your 1997 Ford Mustang is cranking but not starting, and then backfiring loudly out of the tailpipe, it could be a sign of several issues. The following are some potential causes and fixes for this issue:
1) Fuel system issues: If the fuel system is not supplying the engine with enough fuel or if the fuel injectors malfunction, a backfire may occur. To make sure they are operating properly, check the fuel pressure and the fuel injectors.
2) Ignition system issues: A backfire can also occur if there is an issue with the ignition system. Check the spark plugs, ignition coil, and distributor to ensure that they are working properly.
3) Timing issues: Backfiring can occur if the engine timing is off. Check the timing belt or chain to ensure that it is properly aligned and functioning.
4) Exhaust system issues: Backfiring can also be caused by a problem with the exhaust system, such as a clogged catalytic converter or exhaust manifold leak. Check the exhaust system to ensure that there are no leaks or blockages.
Overall, diagnosing the exact cause of the backfiring can be difficult, and it is best to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic who can run a diagnostic test to identify the root cause of the problem. Once the issue is identified, the mechanic can recommend the necessary repairs to fix the problem.

backfiring is caused by your timing being off depending on what you have don like changing the plug wires check the firing order to make sure it is correct this could also cause no start the easiest way to ckeck the timing chain is to place crank at 0 on the balancer pull the distributor cap make sure the rotor button is pointing directly at the #1 plug wire on the cap if the rotor is a 180 degrees out you are not on the compression stroke turu the crank 1 full turn to 0 then check the rotor again if it is not in real close proximity to the #1 plug wire on the cap then it has jump timing change the timing chain and gear. this is not a job for you if you don't know what you are doing
