Hello there.
It is still safe to drive the vehicle to a shop and observe it on the way there. It is best to run it through a code reader to figure out what is causing the problem. Check the wires, connectors, fuses, and relays as well.

100% positive that you need to replace your starter. I had the same exact issue with my car that's the same vehicle you have. Fixed it in about an hour and a $269.00 starter. Carparts was the only place that had the starter. I could have gotten it from the Ford dealership, but it was $578.62
